Argosy Book Store: what do users think?

Michael A: What can I possibly say about this oasis of the past? I am blown away by how much history can be confined into one place. Their book selection, their hospitality, the prints, the lithographs, the maps, the autographs, I can go on and on. I am an avid local amateur historian and public school teacher, I've bought two precious items from this establishment in the past few years. I bought a 1864 map of all NYC public schools and a beautiful lithograph print of Boss Tweed. Laura Ten Eyck was fantastic and helped me frame my NYC public schools map. This place is a must visit if you are a local or a tourist visiting NYC. However, I would argue this place is not a tourist attraction or a random book store. I find it to be almost a sacred vessel of the past. So much to see and purchase.

Victor Romero: Nice place

Eric Dunavant: Amazing collection of rare and used books. Wish we would have had more time.

Yohana Defrita Rufikasari: The best place to find antique book! Worth price and lovely ambience!

ANONYMOUS K: I would recommend this store for anyone who is interested in antique books, or maps. The history behind these books is astonishing. The condition of the books and the store is also very helpful. Everything is maintained in order and clean. The staff also know their stuff. It's so aesthetically pleasing, I could stay here all day! Obviously because of the age and what it has most likely taken to maintain it all, the prices were somewhat high. But to be honest, I would buy them all, if I could. If you want to explore books, and be amazed at its history, come to Argosy!

A B: Visited this beautiful timepiece of New York history recently and it absolutely did not disappoint. The vintage prints and books are well taken care of and I could spend hours just browsing there. I had heard great reviews about the staff, and am happy to say that they are helpful and knowledgeable. One young woman, Erika, was particularly helpful and bubbly. She made my experience joyful and memorable. I look forward to coming back someday!

Lisa Kretschman: I could get lost in here for hours…. This place is a gem from a bygone era.

Westsider Rare & Used Books Inc.: what do users think?

Petite Mort Nur: Young, pretentious, purple haired, and blonde booksellers. Apparently these booksellers don’t want people who are interested in rare out of print items such as Tarot cards. These children asked me for my bag and threw it on the floor next to their feet. Other customers in front and behind me with bags did not have their bag taken. Two minutes later I discovered they didn’t have what I was looking for but before I left, I thought I would ask. When I asked about used tarot cards, they responded, “We don’t do Tarot here,” in the voice of lumpy space princess from Adventure Time. Yes it was that annoying. Apparently this store prefers customers who are bland elitist and out of touch yuppies. They definitely were rude and I don’t care what their excuse was.

Mickey van der Stap: Beautiful little bookshop. I was a bit in a hurry, which you should never be if you're looking for a good book, but the place was very homely, prices where good and there was a good selection of books.

STACE: Stopped by this cute book shop during my stay in NYC. The employees are friendly and helpful for the most part. The prices are in the upper-mid range, but that’s expected especially in a city like NYC. Would much rather support a smaller local bookstore like this one than somewhere like B&N. Will come by next time if I’m around the area.

Antikvariat PRAZSKY ALMANACH: Excellent selection of rare books.

Caitlin Smith: Small, unassuming used bookstore with a surprisingly appealing offering of books. It’s a wonderful place to uncover new favorite books.

Jasmine De La Cruz: Was not a good vibe at all. Smelled incredibly like books but staff wasn't friendly and the space was too small for my plus sized self.

Althea Ross: Prices were great, books were quality, and it was very quiet which I appreciated. It's a tight squeeze, so don't plan to bring strollers, etc inside.

Esther Ko: Got a cute old edition of Pride and Prejudice from the store! They have a wide range of collections and sell used books for ~$5. Great place to find good reads, especially if you’re not looking to spend $25 on a book.

max tang: I have been to this book store twice now. The first time was perfect with respectful and polite staff, the second time not so much. The staff were rude and unhelpful. My friend was having a glance for his fathers book collection in the upstairs rare book section when we were interrupted by an employee who rudely told us to leave. He rudely pointed at the stairs indicating we had to leave. My friend was of colour and i’m not sure if that had anything to do with it. Nevertheless, my friend posted a review saying we were kicked out for no reason and what i’m assuming was the same employee replied, quite arrogantly, that kids aren’t allowed in the upstairs section, and that it was closed on sundays. This makes no sense as there were other people on the upstairs section and i have been before and haven’t been denied access to this section due to my age. The bookstore had a good selection but i was very unhappy with the staff, hopefully this can change. Following is a personal message for the man that kicked us out: Dear sir, arrogance and rudeness will lead you nowhere in life, perhaps this attitude is the reason you work in a bookstore, in future, i hope you realise the wrongs of your ways and aim to change them. I have seen that this isn’t a one off as i have seen reviews in the dozens complaining about staff rudeness. I apologise to all the kind staff and the kind woman that served me upon my first visit to this bookstore and i hope you don’t have to deal with such arrogance for longer. All in all, visiting this bookstore isn’t worth it as there is a better one just 1 block down the road. PS: Notice how the majority of 1 star reviews are complaining about the owner. Please, if you see an old man with gray hair working whilst you’re about to enter, don’t bother.

Arjan Samrai: Rude employee: kicked me out of rare book section for looking around

Hafiz Waleed Hussain: Nice

Sanjana Kaicker: Rude staff, high pricesI popped into this store for a second, as I was interested in buying an English–French dictionary. I was a little confused about the pricing since there was a sign outside the door and I wasn’t sure what it referred to. I politely asked about the price since it seemed a little high for a used book and received a very rude response. Never giving them business; they hardly deserve it.

stephen parise: . So I requested a refund, which I received. All good.A few weeks later, I saw the book I had ordered was for sale again from this place. I wrote and asked is it was indeed the same book and was sent a reply quickly. I then asked for a discount since the mishap the first time. The person who responded wrote that if only I had waited to receive the book instead of opting for a refund, I would have the book by now.**Note** There was no indication I would ever receive the book, which is why I asked for a refund. No matter how much I would like to buy the book, I will search onward.Their customer service seriously needs to change.I get they're New Yorkers and all that and have to have a certain attitude, but I'm from NY too, and I would not write such a snotty response. For shame!

Filip Oliver Tv: Good prices we paid only 1$ for outside books and variety of options inside the shop as well

Varvara Mokrushina: happy place

Alexandra Hargray: And if it's not on hand it can be ordered and delivered to the store for pickup. I'd give it 10 stars if I could :

m: wasn’t eligible to be bought back, and the first thing that comes out of this employee’s mouth is “well our buyers know what they’re doing.” When did I ever imply they didn’t? Just rude. Won’t be coming back for the foreseeable future.

William Smith: This quaint little bookstore in New York City offers a unique selection of books and a cozy atmosphere that makes it perfect for an afternoon of reading.

danielle lee: Luv it

Steven Livesay: The candles they sell are wonderful!

Belen Olmedo: Two hours browsing books that felt like two minutes! Total must!

Tejas Gupta: Bit disorganized but that’s the charm.

Jeremy: My favorite used bookstore in nyc. Small, but always something interesting there

Matt Bernson: Last time i came to NYC i got 2 books here. It's a relatively small book shop but the selection is good and the prices are fair.

Joanna Fitzick: It felt like my own bookshelves but better.

Verónica Villegas: Great bookstore, but some materials are overpriced even if some of them are not in the best conditions due to age

John Dinyari: A tiny gem. As interesting a collection as it is small..

Julia Catacutan: Codex is my favorite bookstore in the city.

G. S.: Pretty nice selection of books! A bit cramped and the prices were also a bit high. Also the same annoying song was playing on a loop for some reason, but what matters is that I walked away with a nice first edition with promo materials and I also got two neat postcards. Worth the visit if you love literature.

woke eye (Eye Pop Compilations): You will not regret visiting this place. Forget the Strand

Anya: I love this place they always have the strangest books but still get orders of all the new content I want. Newer books can be priced a little high but so great for used books. Top two books I’ve bought here are One Hundred Poets, One Poem Each and Astrology in the Vedas.

kevin mahon: Great Staff Excellant selection.

Tony Shure: great coffee

The Corner Bookstore: what do users think?

toffy concepcion: This is a wonderful old fashioned bookstore with 2 comfortable benches to sit on. Really nice collection of books.

Carmella Schultes: Magical. An enchanting and charming shop.

Rebecca Carroll: Hands down my favorite book store in NY. They have a wonderful selection, knowledgeable staff, and are always willing to help you find a book they don’t have in stock. Also offers home delivery within the neighborhood!

긍정만: 서점이 너무 예쁩니다. 서점이 큰 규모는 아니지만 어퍼 이스트 돌아다니시다가 구경가기 딱 좋습니다.

Emmy Harris: Best bookshop in NYC which is saying something. The selection is so good, it’s so easy to find something amazing that you’d never find anywhere else, even looking online! This is the very point of bookshops in the days of internet. Atmosphere and curation is beautifully done.

Pablo Guerrero: Great variety and service!

Mary B.: Such a cute place! Staff was so friendly and the atmosphere was lovely. I could probably spend hours here.

Jimmy Rodriguez: Nice books.

Sarah Jolicoeur: Must visit for book lovers. Small, quaint and eclectic selection

Vee Krew: Good

Aaron Menezes-Pinto: Nice place. A bit small if you go on the weekend when it's busy. Staff are helpful and attentive without being annoying.

Jean-Christophe GLISSE: I am French and during my week spent in NY, I wanted to discover American authors who described the atmosphere of this city. I only knew the classics "Manhattan Transfer" by John dos Passos or "The Great Gatsby" by Fitzgerald, which I had read in French translation.I had the good idea to enter this bookshop and the bookseller advised me very well by making me discover James Baldwin, Colson Whitehead and Jay Mc Inerney.I thank the bookseller for these literary discoveries, this bookstore is a must for all lovers, like me, of books and New York.

Mast Books: what do users think?

alla zaslavsky: Excellent curated book store

Gabriela Tama: Best bookstore in the East Village - no question about it! Mast always has something new and unexpected to offer. I never leave empty-handed.

Shane Cobalt: A very specifically curated book store with emphasis on photography and art books. Really wonderful to find odd titles on odd subjects. A pinch of hipster pretention is in the air, but that's not a bad thing in this case.

jasmine benjamin: Thoughtful selection of books!

Pedro Ramos: Is small cozy place to escape the fast pace of NYC with a good book.

Mark Z: Great books, awful staff.

Ahmad Farhat: A really impressive bookshop. The selection isn’t huge but covers such a wide range of topics that you can easily find yourself list in there for hours. We were able to come across some pretty obscure volumes too that aren’t always the easiest to find. Will definitely be including this on my roster of stores to visit whenever I’m in New York.

D J.: Saw a book I wanted on the window, had a sticker saying $195, Davide Sorrenti - ArgueSKE.Although it was sealed and quite rare, a 5 second search online, found it for $82 including delivery from England and had many in stock. They need to adjust their prices here. Probably won't last long, anyway.

Dashwood Books: what do users think?
Ellen Tsai: The staff at this bookstore is incredibly friendly, and there is a diverse selection of photobooks available!
Jon Rusen: great selection — though overpriced.
jasmine benjamin: Favorite book store in nyc for many years.
Grant Gwynne: Beautiful shop, amazing selection, flawless service.
Liz: ksjv v in cwith
alison m: Incredible must see photography boo store!!!
Arabella Tamlin: obviously brilliant… lovely collection & kind service
Evan Davis: Amazing bookstore. You must stop by if you are in New York and are a lover of photobooks. Magic.
niro MA: 寶藏攝影集書店
Thomas Hammoudi: I am quite disappointed. I had heard a lot of good things about it. The selection is really good. On the other hand, it's totally messy, I got tired of it and left.Nothing is organized, the same artist can be found on several different shelves. Many books are still packed, impossible to get an idea of the content. And many (40%?) have no price. So you have to ask the question every two minutes. I preferred to pass by, it's a shame.
Sahadeva Hammari: A little gem of a bookstore.
Miriam Lubeleski: Favorite Bookshop. Super nice people here and close to my stores I love in lower East side like The Frankie Shop, Pilgrim New York, Desert Vintage on Orchard, James Veloria on East Broadway, Ritual Vintage on Broome. Books and cool clothes at a discount? What can be better in New York?
Gunnar K: A total treat. An essential photo book destination.
Rory Arthur: Miwa Susuda is an amazing manager. She was so kind to teach me about her store and book editing. It's always a pleasure to see their selection and catch up.
Nils Decker: Just had my first and only experience with this business. I ordered something from their website of a photographer that I admire that he advertised on Instagram as a book. I ordered three copies of it because it seemed like a good price ($18 per copy) and well, because I like his work. I also paid $15 for shipping to Canada. What I received is what you can see in the attached pictures. It's literally 5 sheets of paper stapled together in the center and folded over. there is no cover, not protection, nothing to keep it intact.I contacted them and told them that I was unhappy with my purchase. The response was: sorry that you don't like it, you can send it back as long as it's in mint condition, we won't cover your shipping cost. The declared customs value of this was $0.68 per copy, which I think is probably a fair value. I could have done a better job at my home printer with a screenshot of the images and it would have taken me 3 minutes to put together a cover to not make it an amateurish job like this.
Edward Grant: Secreted below grade, down a flight of exterior stairs at 33 Bond Street, this is the hip, East Village home for great art books. Intimate and cool, it is a frequent venue for art events. Pretend it's our little secret.
Nathan Ford: Great amount of selection, and the worker was very kind and knowledgable. Went in looking for a photo book and left with three at a good price. A great spot to pick up a zine or a more well known book.
Lucas Hoops: Very interesting selection of books, good suggestions from owners for books
CLAY NIELSEN: A very well curated book store for photography and art books.Miwa is very sweet and will recommend books based on your tastes and likes. She has introduced me to many artists I would not have found on my own.I often come here for book signings or just to browse for inspiration. It's an easy place to spend a lot of money, don't be shocked when you see the prices. They have a great selection of rare, limited, and signed books of various editions. It is a wonderful store to start your dream library or find the perfect gift.
David W: Great photography bookstore! Definitely could use a better organization to make it easier to find stuff, but I have found the staff to be more than helpful on multiple occasions. Often find myself in a nice conversation with the staff or patrons. This are the businesses that make NYC awesome!
Jam Yoo: Great small shop in a hip neighborhood. Great selections of art books and rare publications. The interior is also neat with natural woods. They also hold a decent selection of local artist zines and publications that are always nice to go through
