The New York Acting School for Film and Television: what do users think?

Monica Pratt: I think that my experience would have been a better one if I had a different acting teacher at the time in the early 2000s. My teacher was Mr. Angel David and he wasn't a very nice person at all as I remembered...Response from the owner 11 hours agoThe individual has never attending the school. There is no record of attendance. There is a high likelihood that she is shilling for a competitor. Not "shilling for a competitor." My review was honest and sincere. I simply had the wrong school. My apologies.

Jon Strong: The school definitely helped me to expand my range as an actor. Now I am comfortable to be vulnerable on camera. I am much more confident in my delivery now. I can do drama and comedy with no problem ✨️🎬🎞📽💪❤️ I also learned a lot about the difference between the reality of the movie and our reality when you are acting. Especially when you are on a close up.Commercial classes helped me personally to become more believable when I promoting something.Last, but not the least, everyone is friendly and no one is judging you. Very helpful! Thank you guys! Much love! Keep shining!

Sari Crawford: Fantastic teacher and amazing school! Mark Stolzenberg took me from an amateur actress to working and learning in film in just 6 months! He also helped me with audition prep, which resulted in an acceptance and scholarship to a top acting conservatory. Whether you’re serious about acting as a career, or you just want to broaden your horizons, I would recommend this school and instructor to anyone.

Carlos Bernabel Jr.: I’ve been working with Mark for over a year and he’s a great teacher and his live classes are a fun experience for everybody thanks to him. Happy to have attended!

Rory Knox: If you're looking to make acting your profession, look no further. Mark and Karen are the best in the game when it comes to teaching acting. I have become a better actor than I could possibly hope to come thanks to this acting school. Mark truly knows how the professional acting industry works and he will make sure that you are prepared for the real thing! I would not be where I am today if it weren't for my time here at this school. Not to mention I made some amazing friends here and this school as a whole has changed my life!

Mikal Jocelyn: Mark was great! Learned so much from just one class!

Nick Kantor: I had an absolutely fantastic experience. Honestly I wasn’t sure what to expect being as I’m new to actor for film and television, but Mark has been nothing but stellar thus far. Would highly recommend him for others who are new!

leslie hayes: I have had years of experience with acting schools and teachers, and MarkStolzenberg is the best of them. He is able to articulate, in very few words, how to understand a character's motivations and then get it across to thecamera / audience. He is kind, never belittling, and one comes away from each class feeling more confident in the craft of acting.

Saniya Alekar: Highly recommend this class as Mark is a great teacher!

Tasha: I have researched this acting school although located here in Texas, from the reviews, I will definitely look into this particular film acting school with Mr. Stolzenberg, reviews do make a helping difference. This is my future calling, and will aim for my dream.

Rayvin Disla: Mark Stolzenberg is one of the best actin coaches in New York City. He creates an environment in class where you are able to not only learn but laugh and have a stellar time. I highly recommend it.

Maggie Flanigan Studio: what do users think?

Makana Ching: Once I finished the two-year Meisner program, I felt fully equipped to take on my acting career. I wasn’t planning on enrolling in the business program, but I am so happy Charlie convinced me otherwise...With the business program coming to an end, I find myself reflecting on how rewarding it has been. The years it would have taken to learn everything in the program, is just one reason why it’s worthwhile. I grew exponentially as an artist and as a professional, have a greater acting toolkit, and have developed industry relationships that I intend on nurturing throughout my career.I have so much gratitude and admiration for my teachers and mentors of this program: Charlie Sandlan, Dariush Kashani, and Mackenzie Lansing. Choosing Dariush as the head of the business program was the wisest decision Charlie made.

Gibran García: I attended the MFS summer intensive because I wanted to be a better actor. In every class, my limits were pushed. The level of commitment that is expected from you is nothing short of 100%. Charlie has a complete domain of the craft. He is so tuned in with what's happening during class. It was very hard, but eventually, I was able to be fully present, to really listen, and to express how I feel. The best experiential, moment-to-moment acting of my life has been done in Studio A of the Maggie Flanigan Studio.I am very much looking forward to attending the 2-year program!

Liv Lamberth: I applied for the summer intensive in hopes of attending the full 2 years after, if the approach was to prove itself as right for me. I could never have imagined the journey I was to go on. Charlie facilitates a safe environment to explore ones truths and live them out without inhibitions, moreover being encouraged to do so. The summer intensive gave me a glimpse of what I am capable of and definitely got me hooked on the full program.

Zac Mira: I came to the summer intensive because I lacked an approach when it came to acting. I felt I lacked a foundation and was too in my head all the time. The summer intensive gave me exactly what I was looking for, and also really allowed me to have a deeper understanding of the craft. I absolutely fell in love with the course and enjoyed being in an environment with other actors hungry to improve their craft. Maggie Flanigan Studio has a high bar set for actors making it the perfect place to come to if you're a serious actor who wants to rise to the top!

Nicole Almanzar: Maggie Flanigan Studio is a transformational experience! You walk into this training intensive as one person and walk out an improved one. If you are willing to take yourself seriously as an artist this is a good place to do that. I did the 6 week summer Intensive and I was able to peel layers and confront doors that I had no clue were blocking me as an actor/artist. There is a safe environment to deal with the feelings/emotions that come with training/ working to be a professional and I’m so grateful for the staff and students for it! I am excited to begin my 2 year conservatory program and the rest of my journey inside of this beautiful art form.

Christine Nyland: I came to the summer intensive looking to shake off some rust and found an approach that allowed me to do the sort of work I've always admired in others, work that I had thought was beyond me. It'll take more than six weeks to fully own that, but for now the possibility has changed what I expect of myself and my work.

Humberto Perez: The Maggie Flanigan Studio reintroduced acting as an art form for me. During my time here I learned the meaning of truly being. Doing the hard work while attending this studio was the artistic challenge I have been seeking. And having had time to digest some of the teachings I’ve never felt so confident as an artist. I will also say that the close connections I made with my classmates also contributed to the learning experience, everyone was serious and ready to learn, ready to play, and ready to act. Charlie is the type of instructor that will tell you what acting is when he sees it; conversely, he will also tell you what acting is not when he sees it. As a student it is important to know the distinction and invaluable to hear when you are not acting. Charlie teaches you how to respect the truth by always telling it. Even when it hurts.

Amanda Troisi: Maggie Flanigan Studio. What an incredible two and a half years of my life. From starting with the summer intensive during the lockdown to following through with the two year program, this experience is irreplaceable. Charlie Sandlan is not only a master in his craft but also takes his students seriously and wont lower the bar, instead he wants you to bring your commitment, dedication, and creativeness to the bar he sets. This has helped me grow not only as an artist but as a person. If you want to be a true thespian, if you want to expand your mind, if you want to grow, I say go for it! What's holding you back? Take the leap and find your truth.

Jon Concepcion: It was in my first interview with Charlie that I realize I wanted him to guide me. I remember him asking me what I wanted to take away from the class and I said "I just want to be out of my head and be open, brake down the walls that I've built throughout the years" and surely enough I have been learning how to do it. It definitely takes time, but you have to put yourself out there and do the work. MFS was the best place for me to get educated on this field, this is only my first year and I have learn so much. I can not wait for what is to come for me.

Danny Touhey: Training at Maggie Flanigan Studio is one of the greatest decisions I have made for my art. Charlie is focused on fostering a safe community where artistic expression and exploration is not only encouraged, but required. He only works with people who take learning about their craft and art seriously. I have learned so much about myself, and my life through this work. More importantly, I have learned about humanity, and how opening myself fully to another person can create rich, real lived experience. These experiences have helped deepen my crafting. I look forward to continuing the work in Second year. Voice and Movement classes have provided me multiple techniques to strengthen my awareness of my body. As an actor, gaining this knowledge and freedom of my instrument has been crucial.

Cocolo_TV: Critical:Professionalism,Quality,Value

Charles Tak Chow Pang: I have grown a lot since I started taking classes with Charlie, and I have done things that I have never imagined I would do. I am quite practical in real life and everything can seem like a chore to me, but I have learnt to approach my work in class with my heart and soul, and go way beyond my ordinary life to achieve something extraordinary, and have fun in the process. I have learnt to craft with care, daydream truthfully, state things with simplicity, potency and specificity, choose to commit and allow myself to be vivid, take the leap for the impossible, and honor how alive we can all be. I have learnt to take my work seriously and there are things that I have done in class that I am quite proud of. I have come to adore and respect all my classmates and their work, which I know will continue to inspire me even after I finish the program. And I have much love for Charlie and his teaching. I really didn't know anything about acting until I met him.

Allison McHugh: Well into my Second-Year at MFS, I see the value that I'm getting out of these classes. The workload is heavy but rewarding when you start to see progress. Charlie is no joke. If you don't put in the work, he'll set you straight. But if you're dedicated to genuinely deepening your understanding of acting, these classes will do that for you. Maggies was recommended to me, and for that, I'm grateful.

Paul K.: This was my first serious acting class that I took and it met my every expectations and beyond. Is it easy? No. Is it challenging? Yes. But I believe we learn & grow the most when situations are difficult or challenging. I wanted a glimpse of what it meant to be a true artist as an actor and the summer intensive at MFS certainly delivered that. I am going to say that Charlie is not a teacher for everyone. He makes that very clear and it's up to the individual to know for themselves whether they want to learn from a person like Charlie. Personally for me I need an instructor like Charlie. I need someone to push me to places where I am afraid to go as an actor. And while sometimes it was frustrating & scary, those small breakthroughs that happens makes it worth it. The summer intensive allowed me to certainly learn more about myself as a person. Hopefully I can learn and further strengthen my foundation as an actor when I continue to learn the Meisner technique.

Belén Cusi: Online acting classes with Charlie have been a revelation for me. I have found the online format an invaluable way to continue my acting training from home and stay plugged into a community of like-minded artists. And for better or worse, the future of this industry is virtual in many aspects. Is the online platform more challenging to work with at times? Yes. Do I have to hold myself much more accountable for my work? Yes. Do I miss the physical contact? Of course I do — but all of these challenges make the online classes that much more effective for those who are truly committed.I've continued to grow in abundant ways since taking my classes online with Charlie and think there is immense value for those looking to get their acting training started online at Maggie Flanigan.

Juan Cortes: REVIEW FOR MOVEMENT CLASS AT MFS: Movement I was highly recommended to me by all my Acting classmates and by my teachers. I thought that movement class was going to be all about dance and expression through movement in a general way, but it was a lot more centered on specific applications of movement to deepen contact and response with other people, which was challenging but deeply rewarding. It was also about using movement to release my body and allow emotion to flow more freely. The contents of the class were much more intimately related to the craft of acting than I expected. The teacher, Sarah Faye, teaches with humor, grace, and freedom and it was a joy to be part of her class.

Cristian Santiago: It is extremely hard to put into words how much Maggie Flanigan Studio has changed my life. I had no idea how much hard work and how much of yourself was required to become a real TRUTHFUL actor. Charlie pushes you in a such a great way that you leave that stage sometimes numb and in shock at what he is able to get out of you as an actor.I was completely lost before I joined this school and was sometimes lost while in this school but the work that Charlie Sandlan has us doing was so powerful and beneficial that it made me realize that I am exactly where I needed to be.I know this might sound dramatic but this school truly saved and changed my life. It is such a great community, you become close with your classmates and other people attending the school. It became a second home to me when I needed it the most.Having great office staff that are always there to help like Katie and Scott is also an added plus. The movement class with Sara Faye also extremely opened me up 100 percent as an actor and I highly recommend taking that class the second you join the school. If you want a life changing experience while gaining all the tools you need to go out into the world and have a successful long lasting acting career. This is the place you need to be.I cannot explain enough how great of a teacher Charlie Sandlan is, I am so excited to get back into his class this September. Everyone I know feels that exact same way and you will too.

James: Nutrition For Actors quickly became one of my favourite classes at Maggie Flanigan, as I started to notice the difference it was making to my life right away. Every week I looked forward to seeing my teacher and classmates, talking about how I'd been feeling, what my diet was like, and what my goals were for next week. I made some great strides in my life due to this class, everything from joining the gym to cutting down on bad habits and relationships to finding the joy in cooking properly for myself. I would recommend it to anyone trying to find equilibrium in every aspect of their lives.

Adam Marsh: In addition to the Acing Class in the summer intensive, I took Voice 1. Liz Eckert is an excellent voice teacher. She's very attentive and patient with everyone - I could see how much she enjoyed witnessing each of the students progressed along our own exploratory process. Working with her was a pleasure. As a singer and an actor I know how crucial it is to be able to express myself fully, without having physical obstacles that get in the way of fully using my voice to do so. I wanted to see what this class had to offer and see what blocks I might not even know I needed to deal with. The class left me with highly practical techniques in the form of an adaptable warm-up routine. I have something I can use to relax and free up my body and voice for any situation that I need it. The work we did was incredibly subtle; with each exercise and lecture I found how challenging it is to explore how my entire physical body connected to my voice. It was surprisingly difficult to find ways to relax muscles and sense the impact it had. It was also amazing how well it worked, how the exercises we did relaxed our bodies, connected us to our own voices, and allowed us to use them more freely. I certainly identified obstacles of mine in this class that I didn’t fully address, and now I have the tools to explore them further.

Sophie Becker: Playwriting with Elliot Quick was an incredibly fun, helpful, and inspiring class. We spent two months reading a wide array of classic and contemporary plays to understand the different possible approaches to writing our own plays. By the end of the course, I had many seeds of plays, first drafts, and ideas, some of which have come to fruition. I highly recommend this class if someone is interested in creating your own work! Elliot is wonderful and attentive teacher.

The Barrow Group Performing Arts Center: what do users think?

Brittany Blum: The Barrow Group is an incredibly safe, warm, and supportive place to embark on your acting journey for the first time or continue the development of your craft as a working professional. The teachers are always kind and respectful and the technique can easily be applied to theatre or film. When you take a class at TBG you enter into a beautiful community that extends far beyond the walls of the school.

James: If you're seeking a grounded, practical and actionable approach to acting or to add to your toolkit this is the studio for you. Every class and teacher I've encountered at this studio have been ego-free, tuned in and try their best to meet you where you are as performer. If you're an actor coming out of conservatory training feeling like you've lost touch with how to "talk like a person" this will help you tap back into your instincts and only bolster the training you already have. The work ive done at TBG has made my selftapes more authentic and natural and has given me space to shed a lot of the performer traps and habits I've built up over time. This is the real deal place to keep those acting muscles active between auditions in a safe, nurturing community.

Gil Cole: I found The Barrow Group through the recommendation of dear friends who are superb theater artists. I had left my career in the theater in the mid-1980's for a variety of reasons, and pursued a different profession. When I retired in 2021, I knew I wanted to return to my first love, but I needed a place to get back into shape and work again. The Barrow Group's classes were the perfect answer. What has been most striking to me is the Barrow Group's approach, clearly set out in Seth Barish's book, "An Actor's Companion." Unique in my experience, and I worked with many great teachers, is the absolute refusal to use shame as a teaching tool. TBG's approach enables each actor to discover a process that frees rather than inhibits. By practicing where and how to place our attention on telling the story of a scene, what emerges- almost in spite of ourselves- is an abundance of spontaneous life that surprises us. In each class I observe colleagues doing beautiful, truthful work. I enthusiastically recommend The Barrow Group.

Dreena Moran: I took the 2 week Intensive Beginner I Acting Class at The Barrow Group this summer, and it was such a great experience. The instructor, Laura Cornachio, was approachable and knowledgeable and created a safe place to explore, learn, and play. It was incredible to see the progress each student made in just two weeks with simple techniques that allowed more nuanced and spontaneous performances. I would recommend The Barrow Group to anyone looking to start their acting journey or hone their craft.

Alicia Roberts: Arielle Is such an amazing teacher and I learned so much in the beginners I acting class. I will definitely be taking more in the near future!!

Sierra Mayhew: I just finished their Acting 1 class, and it was super fun and informative. Everyone is so supportive, and it’s such a safe space to authentically be yourself. Can’t wait for the next class to start!

Vikki Banks: I'm leaving this review under a different name. This is the WORST acting class experience that I have ever had. They have switched instructors multiple times. We spend an hour of each class reviewing things we learned in the previous week. EVERY class has started from 10-20 minutes late. The instructors do not email you back. I am beyond disappointed. A couple other students in my class not including myself has asked for refunds. Someone named Kevin said no. I will just finish the remainder of my four classes VERY frustrated & hopefully that SOMETHING will change. Stay away from this company.

Charlie McNamara: TBG is a wonderful home for actors at any level who want to become more authentic and flexible in the art of storytelling. The teachers I have encountered there have been insightful and caring, using the approach which Seth Barrish and Lee Brock, the founders, have honed for decades. I feel so incredibly fortunate to have found them, and I cannot thank them enough for their guidance.

B R: and took the Beginner I acting class at the Barrow Group. What an excellent decision. Arielle Beth Klein is a fine & very positive teacher, and the Barrow techniques are absolutely practical - down to earth, immediately useful, and not mired in dogma. Highly recommended.

Michael Daniluk: Great Place to learn Acting! I highly recommend it!

Jeff Neckonoff: Absolutely loved the beginner actor class at Barrow and my instructor, Quinn. The philosophy is awesome, which led me to see actual results. Our class had some amazing people as well, I guess, due to what Barrow is about. Very well run organization as well.

J B: The place is nice. The people are great. The instruction is okay.It appears there are too many students crammed into a single section. We ran out of time every class. Some people don’t get to perform each week, which is a shame.

Yes Man: I've already left them two voicemails and they haven't gotten back to me and they called themselves professional?? I think they should call back

Alan Menaged: This class was really fun! A great, hands on way to learn about and practice acting. The instructors were very knowledgable and supportive, and the technique made me feel more comfortable performing week after week.

Megumi Yoshida: Took a class here in December 2021. The last few sessions were online due to Omicron which was a bummer, but the in-person classes with Laura were excellent. Looking forward to the next class!

Gabriela Koch da Costa Aguiar Alves: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueI took the beginner acting class I with Quinn and it was amazing! I had so much fun and learned so much. Such a safe space to explore and play around and try out the tools they throw to you, and no pressure to be perfect. I also love the acting concepts of TBG! Will be returning for beginners II!

julie voshell: The Barrow Group has given me every tool I need to go out and be a successful actor. The training is amazing! And with it I know I am enough as an actor and I'm confidant to do just that. High caliber of incredible actors there. Thanks Seth and Lee!

Jaimie: The Barrow Group has pushed me creatively, while always being a warm, welcoming and positive place to be. The tools and philosophy they teach here have been invaluable to me as an actor, and I have learned to be okay with being myself. Not only that, but I've made wonderful friends and met great people that I've collaborated with on projects outside of class. Love it!

T Schreiber Studio: what do users think?

Amirah Inman: Critical:ProfessionalismBe prepared for professional photos, videos. Images or recordings of you could be released to people looking to hire you. I've lost opportunities as a result of mock videos and photos that do not portray who I am being released to directors without my permission.

Amanda Bear: I've been studying at T Schreiber Studio on and off since 2014. I've explored studios and teachers all over New York City and have truly never found a teacher that I've connected with or who has made as big of an impact on my career as Peter Jensen. I think I would genuinely credit Peter with teaching me how to act and with teaching me to love acting. There is no place I love in NY more than his scene study class. He is the most honest, compassionate and caring teacher that there is. His deep understanding of the craft makes it easy for him to communicate with actors on a level that you rarely see from acting teachers. The class always feels like a judgement free zone where we, as actors, are encouraged to explore, be playful and grow. I can't wait to go back in person!

Elsa Dial: You don’t just attend classes at T. Schreiber -- you find a family here. As an experienced but young actor looking to challenge myself and continue to learn, I found a home here. I’ve felt supported to take risks and make mistakes, and the online classes have really sustained me through the pandemic. I cannot recommend their classes more. If you want to become a better listener and storyteller, take a T. Schreiber acting class.

Elise Finnerty: If you're interested in being a professional actor as opposed to having your delicate ego stroked then I'd recommend coming here and studying with Peter Jensen. It makes me sad to see some insecure people cyber bully an incredible, professional, and experienced mentor of mine. He has coached MANY actors through the years who are currently WORKING in the real industry. I now write, direct, and produce, and I almost exclusively cast my films based on whether or not they have trained with Peter Jensen because I know they are professional, reliable and most importantly they are open to being DIRECTED. If you want to grow as an actor and artist this is the place for you.

Patrick Robinson: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueA home for actors to hone their craft. The studio is committed to their students whether in the room or online. The training is inspiring and the experiences are invaluable.

Maggie Lee: Peter Jensen is not professional with international talents. It's very painful to work with him, and he likes to judge you without offering any help. He acted like an arrogant boss instead of a helpful teacher. He didn't know my play at all but he started to offer negative & unconstructive feedback to me. He even said that, with an accent, I could not film a professional reel. He acted like he knows everything, but he does not. He is very biased. All the conversations with him were very harmful.

Laura Wei: Peter Jensen has his own perceptions for what kind of people he wants, and whether or not he is open to someone who is different from the people he is familiar with. I'm sad for the programs here since he tries to choose similar people and make them conform in this way, which is not very good for artistic creativity. He likes to judge people's acting without even knowing the play. He also likes to put a label on you and be mean to you without spending time knowing you. He has no experience working with diverse talents from around the world, and he likes to make you feel hurt and disrespected. Don't come here. Life should be great, and you should go to someone who can see your value, or at least someone who respects you.

Katharine Chen: Both Pam Scott and Bill Coelius are rad! I learned so much and am continuing to learn.

Chantal Lamour: Highly recommended! I've been very pleased with Megan Martinez's Camera 1 class and Bill Coelius' Commercial Acting class.

Gabriela Montalvo: I absolutely love the T Schreiber Studio! Their staff is hardworking, talented, knowledgeable and welcoming. They are flexible and helpful. I've grown so much in their Film and TV program. Everyone should take a class here.

Gavin Hammon: Hands down has been my road to enlightenment. Terry brings all aspects of technique to the table. By far the most useful class, scene study and teacher that I’ve ever had!

Fredrick Hahn: Terry Schreiber is a bastion of the theatre, a nurturing but challenging teacher and an extraordinary director. His studio has it all.

Katharina Rembi: Great classes!

Timea Petranyi: I known them for very long they are nice and very professional.

jamie neumann: i found an acting home at T. Schreiber, a place to learn more than i ever had before and to be supported daily. Peter Jensen has been my teacher and mentor for many years and it has been a pleasure to work with him as my director as well. This place is magic.

M Millan: The best thing I love about T. Schreiber, is no matter where you are in your acting career you always learn something new about yourself as an actor here. I studied under Peter Jensen and Bob Verlaque who are both amazing, nurturing teachers! And what I loved most is that their classes created a safe space where actors can express themselves freely and develop their strengths with honest guidance, and without any judgement, which really empowered me creatively. There's never any sense of competition amongst the students, other than support for each other which is so great about T. Schreiber Studios. Love this studio.

A 2: Worst place you could possibly go for training. If you can't audit before enrolling you know there is something fishy. Bob Verlaques literally set me up for failure. I picked myself back up to go see Tom Todoroff and did not regret it. Terry Schreiber whom I only saw once at the studio is too old to be coaching in the first place, he relies on low life people like Robert Verlaques and Peter Jensen.
